A beginner, in many ways
Hello there!
I'm 33, and I only began to play reagularly last year, when I got several pocket boards, and began to search for friends to play with.
I play mainly with two friends, more frequently with one of them, and I play a bit with myself (does any of you do it?).
So, I learned some things, and I consider myself an advanced beginner. I know (reasonably well) to go to the middle of the game, my defence, I think, has gotten a bit better, so does my rear guard in the attack, but I have very little knowledge still to take the oponent's king. (I'm working on it! )
I hope to buy two books, as soon as I can: one is called "History of Chess" (in Portuguese), and another I don't quite remember the title. I don't know which is which, but one's author Idle Becker (?), I think, and the other .. (I was searching the name, but didn't find).
About me, I live in Rio (born here), but I lived in other places, along childhood and youth, including Portugal.
Glad to be here!

Author names, and titles:
Edward LASKER, História do Xadrez ("History of Chess")
Idel BECKER, Manual de Xadrez ("Chess Handbook")

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil correct? There are tonnes of places with Rio (river) in their name
At any rate, welcome.

Hiya!
One recommendation: Instead of just playing the same couple of friends over and over, there are plenty of internet sites where you can play against real people. I recommend freechess.org as a good, free one. You'll learn a lot by getting beat up on by the stronger players.

When you figure out how to take your opponent's king please let us know!

Nevertheless, I still think there are ways of improving ...
(No doubt, in my case! )
