"While many claim that improved board visualization leading to the ability to play blindfold chess is the result of playing chess over a period of time, some people need to work on this ability through a board visualization exercise regimen.

Board visualization training will improve your ability to calculate long variations. Training should take place 3-4 times per week in 5-10 minute sessions.

Board Visualization Exercise #1

Arrange the pieces on a board and look at the normal developing move for all the pieces. The White knights develop to c3 and f3, while the Black knights develop to c6 and f6. The light squared bishop develops to e2,d3,c4,b5, etc. Once you have studied the knights, bishops (regular and fianchetto positions) the castled King and rook and the four central squares (e4,d4,e5,d5) you remove all of the pieces and point and name out loud all of the normal developing squares for the pieces."

Its funny that you should mention Hearst since he comes to the opposite conclusion as Gobet does in that paper on the utility of blindfold chess for improvement in your ability to play tournament chess.

You need to exercise your capacity for critical thinking and not take at face value everything that an expert says as gospel truth particularly when it is not supported by anything beyond his opinion.

I never saw the movie but it sounds like a chick flick to me, or maybe a kids movie. How about this, instead of quotes from a fairytale? movie---how about quoting Hearst where he says anybody can learn blindfold chess and its a good thing to learn as a neophyte. Quote me those lines amigo, or, if you must quote the movies---HOW ABOUT A MANLY MOVIE!!!!! Or a chess movie!!

Great, great movie. And it provided another quote that I've seen applied to chess in the past - "Never go in against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!" They didn't intend it to be a chess quote when they made the movie, but it fits so well.

Fromper, Thanks for the movie review. If you say its a good movie, then its probably a good movie---but, the title alone is enough to throw me off.

The title should be intriguing, or mysterious, or exotic---The Godfather, Silence of the lambs, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, A Clockwork Orange, Unforgiven etc.

I probably miss a lot of good movies because of my peculiarity but I will not go to a movie that sounds like something your woman would drag you to.

We are who we are---doesnt everyone have his peculiarities, his biases that diminish his enjoyment of life to a certain degree?

I wouldn't call that a movie review. I just said it's a great movie. That's a recommendation, not a review.

And your first hunch was somewhat accurate - it is a fairy tale. With a little bit of "chick flick" sensibility to it. But it's a fairy tale in much the same way that Blazing Saddles is a western, and Spaceballs is an epic sci-fi adventure. It's more of a comedy than anything else, and it's incredibly funny. It's one of those movies that has a lot of very quotable lines, as Crash demonstrated in this thread. I've used that particular quote in the past myself.
