Research his games in a database to see what lines he usually uses against the openings you play. Then, you can bash out 15 moves of theory, just like him. Then, when he starts improvising in the middle game, you'll have no idea what's going on. But it'll be a great way to learn more about a line in an opening that you normally play anyway.

I heard GM's say they don't like tactical melees in simuls because in the few seconds they have to move anything can happen. However that does not mean playing crazy unsound gambits or sacs.

nope that just means it's good to play a sharp complicated novelty that you have analysed beforehand. However, if you have such moves prepared you most probaby don't need to ask such questions.
This ofcourse doesn't mean you can't do such a thing almost as well as the top players do, but it's a weird feeling when you see someone playing "your" novelty before you had the chance! (happened to me before and I was cursing carlsen for it! )
I think that's what I said. Yermo often plays 1.d4 and he's pretty familiar with the Benko Gambit having written about it, but a prepared novelty such as you suggested might do the trick. Or maybe the QGD Botvinnik Variation, but you can't prepare in a day or two.
This game is tomorrow. I'll post the game here and maybe talk a bit about the lecture he's going to give and just my experience in general. I'm excited, this is the first time I've played a GM!

I played in a simul with Yermolinsky last April, my goal was to not be the first one to lose I made it to the middle of a 20 person field before resigning on the 26th move (would have been mated in a couple more - and there was nothing I could do about it) I lost in a Spanish line, don't recall the opening or line of the last man standing, I think that board went to 32 moves.
