Currently I use disabled kids where I help out at as chess pieces, clearly this is good fro nice spring days and summer days, but a bit unfair during rainy periods

Does anyone have suggestions other than put the kids in waterproofs

Playing indoors, using umbrellas or using actual pieces are three sensible alternatives.

How do you select which kids are which pieces? And are there 'special effects' when they move (e.g. falling over or rolling off the board when captured)? After all, these are disabled kids we are talking about here.

Generally i will use the kids in wheelchairs as pawns, as some are a bit chubby and hard to move far, which is why it is not possible on soft wet ground.

Playing indoors, well the club we use is too small, and there are other activities.

Some of the kids enjoy it and help me choose the move, some are quite good players. There are a few cheeky ones who move squares and sometimes it gets heated, some of them have right tempers.

As for making noises , only the seriously disabled ones make noises, but they generally do it throughout the game
