I use Sigmachess/HIARCS for Macintosh which is a database program, allows comments, analyzes as well. Downloads from PGN, with or without notes.
Allows searches by name, tournament, year, or ECO.
I also use JOSE, and Shredder for Macintosh. Shredder I found out also has a download feature from PGN.
I use CM for Macintosh and Kasparov Chess. Macintosh has a GNU program which comes with the computer.
With Windows XP in the same computer, I use Chessbase lite, and the latest Fritz. Obviously Chessbase and Fritz allow CB downloads including books
(without the notes to avoid copyright violations.
CM I have been using since CM 1000 for Macintosh which came on Floppies.
CM 1000 had flaws which crashed after you typed in over 90 move games, such as games from the Tal - Botvinnik matches. The programmer indicated to me that he was working on upgrades to avoid the problem. CM 2000 & 3000 were improvements.
The flawed program was CM 4000 which fell into mate in 4 moves very easily. CM 6000 was a vast improvement which worked very well with my older Macs. CM then went to 9000 for Macintosh (the current version) for OS system 10 for Macintosh. I can no longer use HYPERCARD CHESS or Sargon Chess since both are no longer supported by Apple due to Operating system 10.5 Leopard.
Sargon was given out by Apple with a purchase of a new computer at the time. The older version of Sargon also came with the B/W SE machine of the 1980's. Then it appears that Apple provided the GNU version with later versions of Apple Operating Systems. OS 10 and up.
In a bench test by MacWorld, it was indicated that the Intel Mac (Leopard)
with Windows XP runs faster than on a standard Windows Machine.
I use the Windows program to read Chessbooks such as CB 's CDs and DVDs on Steinitz, Lasker, Tal, and Fischer. Plus the newer books on Chess Tournaments, and Roman's Lab on Fischer.
In the mid 90's CB created a Macintosh CD which had ever game on record up to 1995, with search features such as those in Chessgames, or Chesslive.de. I believe there was a Windows as well which I never tried out.
