I remembered reading a chess book by Ruben Fine some time ago. He was talking about a more defensive opening move where you build a "house" around the king. Can anyone remind of this opening?

No, it is not castling. Although castling is a prerequisite for this defensive opening. Is looks something like placing lots of pieces (knights, pawns, and rooks (maybe the queen) ) around the castled area. The way he showed to execute this defensive maneuver was very elegant and this is why I wish to look at it again.

I think you are referring to Yasser Seirawan's book Winning Chess Openings. In Chapter 7, An Opening Solution, he has a sub-para entitled "Building a House." The opening advocated is white playing Nf3, g3, Bg2, 0-0 in that order. If I'm not mistaken this can lead to a multitude of openings depending on how Black choses to respond. Seirawan himself shows the Barzca, Closed French, King's Indian Attack among others.

In his book "The Sorcers Apprentice" Bronstein calls thoes moves building a house as well. It should look like this.
