I thought chess variants referred to variants based on what we call western chess. Things like Bughouse, Crazyhouse, Fischer Random, and such.

In a sense, I guess it is infinite.
But the OP got me thinking, it seems like most cultures have their own type of chess game. But in fairness, I think Shogi, Janggi, and Xiangqi can be grouped into one similar group. So along those lines, how many world version of chess are there?
