Chess Forums tournament?? - Chess Forums

In a recently read post, I saw that we may be able to play games while in the forum. I don't know how true this is, nor if it's going to happen anytime soon. In fact, I may have even misread it..

However, that got me thinking that we could organize some sort of tournament for our members.

For example.... we could post pairing let's say on Monday, and require that the results are submitted by Saturday, that way on Sunday we can make new pairings.

The time control could be something like G-60, and the place to play could be anywhere where the pairees wanted to. Playchess, ICC, Yahoo, Pogo.... heck, even in person if they were close enough.

This is a rough idea, but I would like to see if there's any interest for it so the details could be honed out. (What kind of tournament: ladder, swiss, quads, a bigger round robin)

I would love something like this as it would force me to actually put some effort into online chess. I realize that my concentration online is a tiny fraction than that OTB.

I like the idea, if only to get to "meet" some of the people here. One thing I don't like about FICS is that I don't have a sense of community there (yet. I'm sure given a few weeks I'll run into the same people a few times).

I like having a forum I can check while at work to see what's going on, and hopefully some people here I'll catch online.

Anyway, the biggest catch I see is a common platform. If that can be settled reasonably (web based, most likely?), then I'd be in for anything G 30/5 up to G60/5.

The tournament idea sounds pretty good, and I'd probably participate.

With regard to your comment above, there are other online chess leagues that are good for that sort of thing. There are two of them at FICS (freechess.org) where you're on a team and you get paired once a week to play an opponent at a speed of either 45 45 or 60 15, depending on which league. It's a great way to make friends with your new teammates and get slow games online with a reason to take them seriously. I find it's great practice to prepare for OTB tournaments.

i dont think i would be interested in playing at all. I have signed up for so many chess sites and started so many games, that i have just got fed up playing them. IMO these kind of one move a day games offer anyone the chance to just ask uncle ''Fritz'' a thing or two. At least when playing blitz 'real time' games, it cuts that option out, unless someone wants to lose on time

The appealing thing about these forums for me is the option of not playing games and to just coverse about chess, discussing positions, opening lines, ideas etc can go along way rather than playing games that, might not bring any benefit to anyone and only make some heads bigger, or some heads smaller!

Well... I appreciate your opinion. Thankfully it has mostly been positive.

However, I don't know if you misunderstood, but I said it would be a G-60 or something along the lines.. That means no correspondence type games. One would find the time, and then decide to play the game there.

I am a member of RedHotPawn and It's your turn and i play the correspondence type games.... and if there is cheating it must be minimal, as I have never felt that I've played anyone that's too computer-like

I'll play. I mostly play on ICC, but I suppose I could download another client if my opponent plays there.

Perhaps we should make a list of players that want to play for sure. We can wait for a week or maybe 2. Then we'll be democratic and vote for a time control of the games, and then we'll be ready to start.

If anyone has any other suggestions feel free to bring them up.

I'm willing to play, put me down. But I don't know if I'm ready to play really experienced players yet. Let me play with the amateurs for now.
