Because it's really a French with c5 built in and your knight blocking the f-pawn. That's why  .

Hmm, similar to what dr. Max (Euwe) recommends in the Tarrasch French actually: 4. exd5 exd5 5. Bb5+ Bd7 6. Qe2+ Be7 7. 0-0, 5. ... Nc6 is a little better though white's firmly in the driver seat there. My kind of chess with white anyway

i play the french occasionally, and found it pretty reliable, though i've switched to dark-square systems lately.
