You can and I just did. Here's the classical interpretation:
1. e4 e5 = open
1. e4 ... = half-open
1. d4 d5 = closed
1. d4 ... = half-closed
What you're talking about is the modern interpretation, which is position-based and you can't tell that until the game has reached its 'the GMs go to work' stage.
