Roughly about 5-6 years. I didn't get real serious about it till about 3 years ago, but I had the benefit of having friends who have a rating of 2100+. It helped me a ton. They really got me over the hump of calculation and indirect defense.

Strong players can really help you, I was greatly helped by a 1900-2000 player when I got started to play "serious", just getting back to playing chess.

It is always nice to have someone there explaining things to you. Books are great resources, but they can't examine a game for you or let you know when you just made a horrible blunder that doesn't seem like it is so bad. I actually posted a game between me and my friend who is the best out of our group of 4. I still haven't beat him as it seems like I can only draw against him.

Well at our chess club we had a player at about 2000, and one who was around 2150, and the guy who was 2150 was a complete jerk. When I got lucky vs. him and beat him, the guy stormed out since a 14 year old had beaten him. Jeez, that was...gulp...13 years ago
I getting old
the guy at 2000 helped me out a lot, tried to train me to stick to a plan...

That reminds me of a time someone challenged my friend out of the blue down at the college when he saw we were playing chess. So my friend played him. The stranger was cocky, but was good at chess. So after a rather good chess game they arrived at a spot where the stranger said "Mate in 8" and three moves later my friend said "Checkmate, You gave me one in 3." It was priceless.

Ok not a problem. That is what is great about chess. You can pause it.

Indeed, I at least wanted to warn you that our quick fire moves are to slow down.

We are getting into the part of the game that requires more thought anyways so a slower pace will benefit both of us.
