Black to move and win. This position came up in a tournament game the other day, and I was down to 2 minutes left, so I didn't have time to think about it. I ended up drawing, but if I'd had another 5 minutes on the clock, I'm pretty sure I would have spotted the winning combination here.

Wow lol, to be honest it took me a few minutes of working it out, but I think I found the win. Qh1+ Kf2 (forced), then Qh2+ Kf1 (also forced), and then Qe2+ picks up the rook. Right?

That would be it. It seems so simple once you see it. I really didn't feel bad about not being able to win the infamous QvR battle in time trouble, until I saw this combination in reviewing the game afterward and realized how straightforward it is. Now I feel like an idiot.

Man, I freak out really bad when in time trouble, especially online. In a long game, if I get low on the clock, I rarely win unless the game is a pretty straightfoward type win. I get befuzzled and can't see mates, can't get out of checks, can't do much of anything. That is why I like increments, even if it's small. If I get 2 seconds for every move, it's highly doubtful I'm going to lose a won position.

However, like I said, it really did take me a couple minutes to find the win there, probably because I'm more of a slow player myself. A draw is SO much better than a loss, and I think you did fine . At least you review your games, that puts you far and above the average folk in my opinion.

Yeah, I'm pretty slow myself. This was a USCF tournament game with a time limit of 90 minutes for the first 30 moves, then an hour added, with a 5 second delay, and I still got down to 2 minutes left when we reached this position. At this point, I was just grabbing the first queen check I could find on most moves, and I played Qe1+ here.
