I am doing some simple Chessmaster puzzles as I re-learn chess. The puzzle below is "White to move. To what piece should White promote?". The answer is "Rook". For the life of me, I don't understand why rook is a superior choice to Queen (Or when it ever could be).



Can anyone clue me in?

Ok, if you promote to a queen, take a look at where the black King can move...

Can black move any other pieces?

Also promoting to a bishop is as bad choice as queen. Promoting rook or knight will win - rook immediately, knight somewhat later.

I get it now. Promoting to queen results in a stalemate, whereas rook leads to checkmate the next turn.
