E4 is just too common, I was thinking of developing it as a suprise weapon. Only thing is, it doesn't seem like much of a weapon. Prove me wrong!

I play the English. It's a very balanced, straight forward opening that doesn't have many sharp SHARP lines.

If you're looking for a suprise weapon, I suggest learning a few gambits.

Yes, e4 is common, but that's not a bad thing! Well, maybe it is a little bit bad (in that, I mean that opponents are prepared against the e4 opening since it is common), but it's still good.. if you see what I mean. I don't like the English all that much compared to e4.. and as Bryan said, use gambits as surprise weapons.

I play the English almost exclusively and love it. But it is NOT usually sharp. Most of the time there is a lot of positional maneuvering. Korchnoi sure has won a lot of games with it though.
