Euh, 1. d4 f5 is still a Dutch defense, g6 signals the Leningrad (-setup).
Unfortunately, I only play 1. e4 with white, don't like the Leningrad tabia with black (I much rather play a classical setup with e6)..
I like the From gambit against the Bird, but I only have my own analysis. That and a few (old) ICC lectures by Pete Tamburro..

I know Everyman Chess has a book on the Bird Opening. But I guess you already knew that...

Dear me... I thought everyone knew this.
1. f4 is the Bird Opening (or Bird's Opening). Named after the englishman Henry Bird.

Please, if you read the first post, you see what it is. Read the topic before you ask such questions.

I don't know much about Bird's opening. I've seen it played here and there. I'm not sure its that' great of an opening. I'll have to look it up and check back in with you.
The Dutch defense is pretty strong. I've seen many games won with it. I personally don't play it either, so I'll have to get back to you again.

Birds opening is garbage dont play it, Its the kind of openings that you play to strive for some iniative but black always has a defense that guarantees equality.
For the Dutch Defense, after d4, f5, you can play e4 which is a pretty enjoyable line that gives white a good game. The continuation is usually fxe4,nc3,nf6 bg5.
If they play d5 you can play bxf6 then qh5 check next move picking up the D pawn.
Try it out its fun

I'm sure that, unless you're GM, any GM can beat you with that opening. It's not refuted, it's just considered to give black an easier way to equalize in the main lines. But since only few players actually know the Bird Opening, I think it's very well playable up to a very high level. One thing's for sure: it's certainly not garbage.

LoL, of course if a GM plays it or If Im a GM its good. The point is there isnt any GM's on here so Im reccomending not to play it respectively considering the average level here. Any opening a GM plays will be better than if a 1600 plays it thats the whole point. Im reccomending not to play it for the people asking "if its good"
