However true it is for beginners that they should
not focus too much on opening play, it is still an important part of the game.
It's folly to try and master each and every opening. Most players stick with their opening of choice for a long time at any rate.
Me, I'm a bit of an oddity in that respect, I have a lot of often-played territory that I have several (sometimes completely) different ways to go. For the last year and a half, I haven't played the King's Gambit in any serious game. Some positional type rated 2150 tries 1. e4 e5 against me, having seen me play only the Ruy Lopez for the last year, instead I took out the King's Gambit (I could barely keep myself from grinning, can't remember why). He went for the Fischer variation, kept his pieces too inactive, missed a tactical shot and I ended up rolling over him in 28 moves.
I've had nothing but tough games (mostly losses) against him in e6-Sicilians..
