Anybody have any interesting line to show in the Colle system? I'm a big fan of it.

Where were you when that Colle-Zukertort guy was here?

There is a new book called “The Colle-Zukertort, Revolutionized!” and you can see its page at A Solid, Attacking Chess Opening for White - Home. Author David Rudel covers some things about the C-Z that weren’t in the Smith-Hall or Summerscale books. He makes it fun, and easy to learn. In one part early in the opening he explains the job of each piece and at the end he has a few pages of training positions. He covers lots of lines as well as the anti-Colle variations.

As far as the Colle-Koltanowski goes, I haven’t seen anything new lately.

I normally play the Torre Attack but gave the Colle a try in this game and soon realized I should have known better…notice how Black played simple moves and equalized easily. So maybe that Colle-Zukertort guy was right. Anyway I won’t be playing it again any time soon.

To give any opening a fair shot, you've got to give it some study and more than one game. Although from what I understand, the c3 Colle isn't looked well upon by people of higher rating.

I have a question about your game. Why 15. g3? Why not bxc6? That would have opened up bxe5 or Nxe5 putting alot of pressure on his castled king.

One other thing, the e4 push and the subsequent support of e4 by the knight on d2 is an important aspect of the c3 colle. It frees up the dark bishop for the kingside attack. Moving your bishop to b2 is a Zukertort move and is better developed with b3 as opposed to c3.

If you want a better understanding of how to play the c3 Colle, I'd suggest picking up Oleinikov's e-book.

I think 15.bxc6 is playable but after 15. …Nf4 16.Qd1 Nxd3 17.Ba3 I did not like White’s position because Black appears to have the initiative. He could even try 17. …dxc3. So I played 15.g3 to keep his N out of the game because I wanted to limit his counterplay.

I still think that unless you’re playing a low rated opponent who is likely to allow tactical fireworks the Colle just is not dynamic enough.

I see that problem now. It has to do with the fact a that you went with the traditional c3, taking away your bishop's support and putting your bishop on b3 taking away the bishop's ability to support the f4 square.

I don't doubt that the Colle isn't very dynamic. I'm just saying that it appears that you really haven't studied it and didn't play it very well. Of course you aren't going to do very well if you don't put the background study into it.

You’ve completely lost me. Doesn’t the P-formation c3-d4-e3 form the basis of the Colle? How does Pc3 support the B? What is the relevance for the square f4 in the Colle? As played from b2 the B has a direct effect on the center which seems more important than using it to prevent …Nf4. g3 is the same idea Koltanowski used against Flohr’s …Nh5.

When you say I didn’t play very well could you be more specific? I was following a game by Stahlberg as my stem game. My db shows Black’s 10th move as a novelty. All the games continue 10…Bg4. Post game analysis with Rybka suggested 24.Qxa6 as an improvement over my 24.Ng1 and 31.Nf4 as being slightly better than my 31.exf6. It also recommended 31...Nd3+ 32.Ke3 Nxc1 33.Nxc1 Rd1 34.a5 Ra8 35.e5 as equal, but Black may find the defense difficult with his R vs. N+2P's. If I remember Black was rated around 1900.

Any suggestions would be helpful.
