Nowadays professional chess is so competitive that one has to devote their life to it to remain at the top.

Personally I think Carlsen has better chances than Karjakin at becoming World Champion judging by their ratings, although to accurately predict so far into the future with such a large number of 2750+ players on the FIDE rating list is nearly impossible.

What makes the main difference in the careers of Carlsen and Karyakin is sponsorship money and support from Microsoft which Carlsen has.

This has been why the Russians (With State sponsorship) have performed so strongly, compared to the U.S. players with no state sponsorship.

Sergey is a very respectfull (And respectable) young man. (Based on my relationship with him.) I think he is a great example of someone with extraordinary talent who also possesses humility beyond his years.
It is also my opinion that he has not even come close to realizing his full potential.
