A lawsuit filed in federal court last week accuses two officers of the nation’s leading chess organization of posting inflammatory remarks on the Internet under false names in order to win election to the group’s board. You guys have to go read the entire article. I'm having a hard time deciding which lines are the most ridiculous, with pretty much everyone involved having said at least one thing that made me laugh out loud (including the NY Times writer who seems to think that Usenet is owned by Google).

Eh.. play chess, not war?

I was flipping through an old Chess Life over the weekend, one of the ones where the people running for the various positions get a little column space to campaign...Sloan's was weird.

It seemed more like someone stroking their ego than running for an elected position.

Sloan is weird. I wasn't a USCF member during the election, so I didn't see the campaign stuff in Chess Life, but I can imagine what you're talking about. He's been all over Usenet for years, so I've seen plenty of his madness. The sad part is that he's actually a decent writer when he writes about what he really knows, but more often than not, he goes off on eccentric tangents. I have his book, "Chinese Chess for Beginners", and it's actually pretty good.

Its not that difficult to fake IP addresses on usenet. Some of my usenet enemies did that all the time.
