The Liverpool 800th Anniversary International Open starts today and will run alongside the UK v China Chess Summit at St Georges Hall. As many as 30 Grandmasters are expected for the chess event which has a £10,000 prize fund. The Summit Match begins tomorrow. China defeated Russia in both the men’s and women’s chess matches in the fourth such contest held at Nizhny Novgorod. The overall score was 52.5-47.5 with the Chinese men triumphing 25.5-24.5. Only the Russian chess champion Evgeny Alexeev performed well for the hosts and he was top scorer with an impressive 7/10. Chinese played the same five men who will be at Liverpool.
