Here is a game my 12yr old son played at the club last week.His opponent opened with 1.g3!?

I cannot remember the name of this opening but my son played sensible chess and won the game. I liked it and I hope you will too!

1. g3 d5 2. Bg2 e5 3. d3 Nf6 4. Bg5 c6 5. Nc3 Bf5 6. e4 Be6 7. Nf3 d4 8.

I think this illustrates when you are faced by openings you don't know just play principled chess moves and you should be OK! However I shall have to have a sneek look at 1.g3 games for interest sake......Any thoughts on 1.g3 (other than don't play it! -LOL!)?

I think this only illustrates that your son played better chess. The white player didn't really screw up in the opening. He just played bad moves in the middle game so he lost a piece and then had no plan so he just kept moving his queen from h5 to g4 and f3 and back.

I think this is a typical game for beginners to play. Don't blame it on the opening, blame it on lack of knowledge on tactics and strategies.
