From reading more than several books, it appears they are copies from the Harvard University Library, and New York Public Library. Some day I hope they go to the CCNY (City College of NY) Library and ebooks Reinfeld and Fine.
There are books Fine and Reinfeld wrote which were probably for Grandmasters, and masters.

I’ve downloaded the British Chess Magazine and the tournament books because those are the types of books I’m interested in. Hastings 1895 is a fascinating read. Frank Marshall’s opening book is quite dated, of course, but I know one very strong OTB/CC player who uses it all the time. He combs the book looking for new (old) ideas he can use as “innovations.” One of his favorites is the Sicilian Wing Gambit and Marshall used to play it so did a lot of original analysis.

I also have The Tactical Grob because it’s the opening I turn to when I feel the need to get crazy. The opening has a lot of tactical nuances that befuddles many lower rated players; I’ve won several games in less than 20 moves with it. Its advocate, the infamous Claude F. I'm sure you're familiar with the famous group photgraph of Hastings. Can you tell me why Maroczy is in the photo?

Jackson, thats correct---and obviously the photo was taken after the tournament was over. Lets play chess detective for a moment---how can we tell the tournament is over by looking at the photo? Besides Maroczy being in the photo there is a big clue. Perhaps someone might want to take a shot at it.

OK, I'm stumped. Other than the fact 5 players are missing from the photo I don't see anything. Maybe they left for home?

Yes, perhaps you're right---They had other engagements, but I see five missing. That might be a good indicator the tournament is over---people are leaving.

However the indicator I see (other than Maroczy) is Pillsbury sitting prominently, front and center. Pillsbury was basically an unknown. This was his first big international tournament. I dont think anyone felt he was this good. If this picture had been taken before the tournament started I dont think he would have been given the best place in the photo. And, of course, the top 5 finishers are all together in front row.

Of the guys who are not in the photo---Von Bardeleben story is interesting. I've read Nabakov based his story "The Luzhin Defense" on Bardeleben's life. Well, one thing we know they both did was jump out of a high rise hotel window.

I'm reminded of JH Donners quote---A man just wants to beat you up but a woman wants to change you. I'd rather take the beating. Eventually it will be over and done with...
