As far as I know these books have not been discussed here. Mostly I just see classics. That makes sense because everyone has had a chance to read them. But what about these books by Kasparov? I bought volume one: Steinitz, Capablanca, Alekhine, Euwe. There are a lot of very good games, but unfortunately I don't find it much fun to read. Lots of good analysis of course but I don't know if that counters the reading enough. Wul has anyone else read this book or the others (vol 2, 3, 4). If so what do you guys think.

Woa, I forgot about Lasker. This book is about the first four champions, which Euwe was not. No matter though because it dosen't seem like anyone else has read these books anyway.

I have one of them (part III) on Petrosian and Spassky (mainly because it was relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of the series). I can't say that I have spent a lot of time on it. It looks pretty good and I like Kasparav as an annotator. Eventually as finances permit, I would like to get the whole series though I will probably buy the new book on the Kasparov-Karpov matches before I look to add to this series.

Classics?

This thread seems to be dedicated to an instant classic. What a series. And by Kasparov? A great addition to any library.

thanks for you guys imput. The book does seem quite excellent. However, I guess I am just more of a fan of books that explane every move from the pratical side withought going too far into deep analysis. Probably then that just means the this series is very advanced. thanks again for your replies.

I also have Part III, which I bought because I want to study Petrosian's style. I've only played through the first couple of games, but the book does seem fairly advanced. I'm hoping I'll "grow into it" and will probably get some of the other books in the series later.

There is a new book about Petrosian and his games vs. the elites. I highly recommend that to anyone but particularly to someone who wants to study him.

Thanks, zatoichi! I actually went on a book buying binge last week and bought that one, too. I've just skimmed it so far, but it looks like an excellent book.

I'm actually working through Nimzovich's "My System" right now and am hoping this will give me a good foundation in "positional" play that will help my understanding as I play through Petrosian's games.
