Living in a place like I always have plus before retirement having to work thousands of hours a week (or so it felt), CC was the only opportunity I had. I did play quite a bit of OTB in the ‘70’s though but I realized right in the middle of one OTB event that I really wasn’t enjoying it…felt like I was working straight through the weekend with no break. These days CC has become less attractive because of engine abuse. What I’d really prefer is being able to play offhand games at a chess club, but like I said, here in the village of Butt Crack there aren’t any chess players. After 50 years of chess I’ll probably end up abandoning the game because of lack of OTB opportunities and engine abuse in CC.

One thing I have noticed about Internet Chess and OTB Chess is that playing hundreds of games on the Internet doesn't improve your OTB play, but playing hundreds of games over-the-board improves your Internet playing strength.

I have never tried correspondence chess - probably too slow for my liking.

I actually play correspondence, but on an Internet site instead of actual mail. Engines wreck that whole thing for me, but so far the folks seem honest.

I need to practice playing OTB. I play quite well online, but OTB I make silly blunders; my board-vision is pretty bad.

I'm severely lacking in OTB because I'm lacking opponents, but I'm joining a local club soon so that should improve. CC is interesting enough but I just can't get into it, mainly because my online time is always limited. I like to go from start to finish without interruptions.

I have to disagree with some of the comments. Keres played Postal Chess in countless games, as did Steinitz, as did Marshall and countless others.
Oh yes, and Alekhine.
Those postal games helped Keres with his OTB play.
Internet Chess account for nothing, no prizes, no points. The Yahoo points are meaningless. So use the games for experimentation. Try out Openings or lines and see where it takes you. Of course, software by raising the bar
can also complement your chess progress. Use Internet and chess software as a learning experience.
