Hello, I am Dicey and I want to learn chess, but have trouble understanding even the basics. I have looked everywhere to figure out lingo like Nf3 Nc6 but nothing. Anybody have any idea where i can start learning?
Also, I've heard that "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess" is an excellent book for teaching the basic rules, as well as providing an introduction to strategy, tactics, history, etc of the game.

Chessmaster is a very good program for learning the basics. Do all the academies, then play a few games against the computer's programs. After that, I'd suggest working tactics puzzles. Here's a free site:
