The following rules are handy to know. When I played tournament chess and constantly reviewed K&P and R&P endings I committed the following rules to memory.
1) The stronger side’s K has to cover all the squares up to queening
2) If the P advances to the 7th rank with check, it’s a draw
3) If the P advances to the 7th rank without a check, it’s a win
4) The stronger side can always win if his K can reach a square two or more ranks in front of the P, or one rank in front if he has the opposition
5) If the K is in front of the P when he reaches the 6th rank he wins with or without the opposition
The triangulation maneuver (or as I’ve seen it called “turning the opponent’s flank”) is also very important to know.
When I switched to postal chess it was a lot easier because I could always refresh my memory by looking the technique up in Basic Chess Endings.
