One thing I've been doing which has helped me considerably recently:
First, I look for tactical motifs every move. If I find some motifs are present, instead of quickly jumping into calculating lines of play (a time wasting and inefficient method I suspect many beginners of doing, including me), I instead think about the motifs on the board in 'speaking terms.' I talk to myself in my head, in plain english, about what's happening with the motifs and how they might be exploited. This seems to draw me deeper into the board and makes it easier to comprehend how to exploit the position if I can't instantly recognize how to do it via pattern recognition. It's taking some practice to be able to do this every move.
