Alas, I've been playing 50 years and about 20 years ago realized I was not going to get past 2200 and the returns on studying were diminishing and chess was becoming too much like work! Nowadays I'm content just to play and not embarrass myself...well, not too often.  I'm going to retire early in a few months...maybe then I'll take another run at making master.

The sooner one learns their limitations in chess the better. Traditionally it was a game played by old men. Those old men used it as a means to pass what short time they had remaining. Somewhere along the line it got competitive. When chess is no longer enjoyable its time to move on from the game I think. If you study chess in the hopes of improving, thats a noble endeavour but needs to be kept in perspective.
